Helen begins a passionate affair with a man who has no idea what her secret identity is. Helen’s employer calls in Sam to protect her when her lover falls victim to London’s dangerous underworld. Meet Helen Dawson (Keira Knightley), an ordinary mother of two who went up to a politician, right?
Wrong, she was actually a spy before she met the politician and passed the country’s secrets to the spy organization The Black Doves, and for years they have been selling them to the highest bidder. Much to Helen’s boss’s dismay, Helen has begun an affair, and when Helen’s new lover is murdered, she sets out to find his killer. As Helen sets out on her mission, she soon discovers that her lover’s murder is linked to the death of the Chinese ambassador.
I also enjoyed the wit, and Helen and her spy partner, Sam (Ben Whishaw), both do very well
She also gets involved in a lot of gunfights (which reminded me of Shoot ’em Up and John Wick), hand-to-hand combat (which proved she’s not really a damsel in distress), and misadventures (which kept me on the edge of my seat.) These great action scenes kept me interested throughout the series. And I didn’t even get bored of the flashbacks that showed how Helen got her start as a spy, because even in those scenes the gunplay was good. For example, after a lucky escape, Helen dislocates her shoulder and has to put it back in place by slamming her hand into a wall.
I found the ending a bit too convoluted
Later, Sam says, “That was pretty impressive.” And Helen says, “You should have seen me knock two people out of myself in the same afternoon.” While I never got bored and I didn’t feel like this series was overly long and would have worked better as a feature film, I think the final episode could have been 10-20 minutes shorter. I understand that they were trying to make the final episode of the second series a bit shorter, but I still think they could have done it because it would have shortened the series a bit. I also think that if they were to make another series, Helen’s husband Wallace (Andrew Buchan) should be introduced as a stronger character, because Helen has to go undercover throughout the series to investigate the murder of her lover, but although Wallace becomes suspicious, he never confronts her about the cover-up at the end of the series.
Despite these minor issues, I would definitely watch another series, and I would happily watch this series again and buy it on DVD
